Peptide Legality: FDA Status, Research Use, and Gray Areas
Legal status depends on approval pathway, compounding rules, and intended use — not molecular structure. Here is how the categories break down in the US.
Four regulatory buckets
FDA-approved drugs: prescribed and dispensed normally (tirzepatide, tesamorelin, bremelanotide).
Compoundable substances: allowed when they meet USP monograph or bulk-substance criteria and a clinical need exists.
Category 2 bulk substances: the FDA has flagged significant safety concerns, which is where BPC-157 currently sits.
Research-use-only chemicals: sold for laboratory use with explicit 'not for human consumption' labeling.
What RUO actually means
Buying research peptides is generally legal; selling them for human use is not. That distinction is why vendors label vials as research chemicals and avoid dosing instructions.
RUO material is not manufactured under drug GMP. Purity, sterility, and endotoxin content are only as reliable as the third-party certificate of analysis you can independently verify.
Sport and employment rules
WADA prohibits growth hormone secretagogues, GHRH analogs, TB-500, and BPC-157 at all times — in and out of competition.
Standard workplace drug panels do not screen for peptides, but sport-specific testing does, and detection windows for GH secretagogues can extend for days.
